Description

Function and technical context

The Autoprop H5 propeller zinc anode is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to be integrated into the Autoprop model H5 variable pitch propeller, protecting it against galvanic corrosion in salt and brackish water environments. Its function is to act as a sacrificial metal: being electrochemically more active than the bronze or stainless steel of the propeller, zinc corrodes preferentially, preventing wear from attacking the structural parts of the propeller. Without adequate cathodic protection, the Autoprop H5's blades, hub and variable pitch internal mechanisms would be exposed to electrolysis and marine corrosion, which can lead to pitting, material loss and ultimately irreversible deterioration of one of the most sophisticated propulsion systems on the marine market. The TENAUTOH5 reference identifies the specific anode for this model, ensuring correct fit and surface coverage.

When to replace this part?

The zinc anodes must be inspected at least once a season, coinciding with the annual docking of the boat, and replaced when they show wear greater than 50% of their mass or when cracks, fragmentation or loss of adhesion to the support appear. On variable pitch propellers like the Autoprop H5, a depleted anode can go unnoticed for weeks until pitting in the hub or stiffness in the pitch mechanism is detected, symptoms that require considerably more expensive repairs. It is recommended to replace the anode preventively at each seasonal tune-up: the cost of this consumable is minimal compared to a complete overhaul of the propeller or the replacement of internal components damaged by galvanic corrosion.
