ANODE HARNESS SMALL
Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode for Arneson units is an essential component of the transmission cathodic protection system. Its mission is to corrode in a controlled manner to protect the most valuable metal parts of the transmission - such as the shaft, the casing and the bronze or aluminum elements - against galvanic corrosion produced by the action of salt or brackish water. Without this element, the structural components of the Arneson transmission are exposed to an accelerated electrochemical attack that can lead to severe and irreparable damage to the propulsion system. Its correct installation guarantees the integrity of the surface transmission and significantly extends the useful life of the propulsion assembly.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 30% and 50% of their mass, since below that volume they no longer offer effective protection. A completely consumed, fragmented or detached anode from its attachment point is an unequivocal sign that the transmission has been unprotected, which may have already resulted in pitting or active corrosion in adjacent components. Preventive replacement at the beginning or end of each sailing season is the practice recommended by nautical maintenance technicians to avoid costly shipyard repairs.
