Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for Arneson Surface Drive systems acts as cathodic protection of the drive's submerged metal components, attracting electrolytic and galvanic corrosion to itself to preserve higher-cost structural parts such as the shaft, housing and drive supports. It works within the Arneson surface propulsion system, where permanent contact with salt or brackish water generates a highly corrosive environment that, without adequate protection, rapidly degrades the aluminum and bronze alloys of the assembly. Its function is critical: a depleted or missing anode leaves the noble metals of the drive exposed to electrolysis, causing pitting, material loss and, in advanced cases, structural failures in the shaft or transmission unit that can render the boat useless. When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a depleted anode in an Arneson Surface Drive are the appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on the drive casing, discoloration of the metals of the shaft or supports and, in advanced stages, loss of material in joint areas. The standard technical recommendation for sacrificial anodes is to inspect them at the beginning and end of each nautical season, replacing them when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, regardless of the time elapsed; In waters with high conductivity or in boats with complex electrical installations, consumption can be significantly faster. Replacing the anode preventatively at the beginning of each season is the most economical practice to avoid costly damage to the Arneson Drive axle and transmission while cruising.
