Function and technical context

This zinc bar anode acts as galvanic protection on boats equipped with BMW outboard motors and propellers, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the most valuable submerged metal parts. It works within the cathodic protection system, absorbing corrosion that would otherwise attack propellers, shafts, engine legs and other metal components in contact with water. Its zinc composition makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish water environments, where galvanic activity is more intense. Without anodic protection in good condition, the structural and functional elements of the underwater transmission are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can cause irreversible damage and costly repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has completed its cycle is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, since from that point on its protection capacity decreases drastically. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season and replace them preventively at the beginning of each nautical year or after approximately 200 hours of navigation, regardless of their apparent condition. Replacing the rod anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to prevent galvanic corrosion on critical propulsion components.
