Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes for Side-Power lateral thruster propellers with Ø42 mm shaft diameter constitute the main cathodic protection system for the propeller and the submerged metal components of the maneuvering thruster. Made of zinc (ZN), they are designed to oxidize in a controlled manner before the base metal of the propeller, shaft and propeller body, blocking the galvanic corrosion process that occurs when different metals coexist in an electrolytic medium such as sea or brackish water. Without active and correctly sized cathodic protection, corrosion directly attacks the bronze or aluminum of the propeller and the stainless steel of the shaft, compromising the structural integrity of the bow or stern thruster. The REC9445 reference is specifically adapted to the geometry of the Ø42 mm shaft of the Side-Power thrusters, guaranteeing the precise fit necessary for effective protection and secure mounting.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom of zinc anode exhaustion is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is seriously reduced and the helix is exposed to galvanic corrosion. For boats in regular use, it is recommended to inspect the propeller anode of the side thruster at least twice a season - at the beginning and mid-season - and replace it systematically at each annual beaching, regardless of the observed wear. Changing the anode preventively every winter is the most economical measure to avoid replacing a corroded propeller or shaft, repairs that multiply the cost tenfold.
