Description

Function and technical context

The propeller anode for Quick BTQ110/125 propellers with 38 mm shaft diameter is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to act as an electrochemical sacrifice against galvanic corrosion. It works in the propulsion system, mounted directly on the propeller shaft, where the submerged metals—stainless steel, bronze, aluminum—are continuously exposed to salt or brackish water that accelerates oxidation and corrosion processes. Its function is to attract electrolytic current that would otherwise attack critical components of the Quick electric drive, preserving the integrity of the shaft, propeller and casing. Made of aluminum alloy (AL), it is especially suitable for navigation in salty and brackish waters where the aggressiveness of the environment is greater. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, corrosion redirects its action on the metal parts of the propellant, causing costly and potentially irreparable structural damage.

When to replace this anode?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its initial volume, it must be replaced without delay, since its cathodic protection capacity is compromised. For electric thrusters used in regular navigation, it is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replace it whenever wear is noticeable or before prolonged stranding. Changing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the practice recommended by nautical maintenance professionals: the cost of this component is minimal compared to repairing a corroded shaft or propeller.
