Description

Function and technical context

The reinforced Ø 140 mm aluminum alloy rudder disc anode is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a sacrificial anode in the rudder area. Its function is to rust in a controlled manner to protect the metal surfaces of the hull, rudder and stainless steel or bronze fittings against galvanic corrosion produced by the action of salt or brackish water. The reinforced disc design ensures a larger contact surface and longer life compared to conventional anodes, making it especially suitable for installations subject to demanding marine conditions. If this component is completely depleted without being replaced, galvanic corrosion begins to directly attack the structural parts of the rudder, which can compromise the maneuverability and integrity of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the rudder anode needs replacement is a reduction in its mass by more than 50%, at which point its cathodic protection capacity decreases significantly. It is recommended to inspect the sacrificial anodes at least once a season—ideally during spring tune-up and fall stranding—and replace them whenever they show high wear or at the beginning of each new season as a preventive measure. Replacing the rudder disc anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical way to prevent corrosion damage to steering components that can be very expensive to repair or replace.
