Description

Function and technical context

This 160x57 mm oval zinc anode is designed for welding directly on the hull or metal structures of the boat, acting as cathodic protection against galvanic corrosion. It works within the helmet's electrochemical protection system, sacrificing itself by being a more active metal than the steel, aluminum or bronze of the structural elements it protects. Its oval geometry facilitates welding in length areas with flat or slightly curved surfaces, guaranteeing a continuous and effective electrical contact surface. Without adequate cathodic protection, propellers, shafts, rudders and the hull itself are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the vessel, especially in salt or brackish water.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that a zinc anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost more than 50% of its volume, it no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced immediately. Zinc welding anodes should be inspected at least once a season, coinciding with the annual docking of the ship; In especially aggressive waters or with high conductivity, the semiannual review is the practice recommended by professionals in the sector. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid severe damage to the hull or metal appendages, which are considerably more expensive to repair.
