Description

Function and technical context

The smooth bars with a diameter of 35 mm and a length of 400 mm made of zinc (ZN) are cathodic protection elements designed to be installed on submerged vessels and naval structures. They act as sacrificial anodes in the form of a bar, protecting the metal structure of the hull, shafts, propellers and other underwater components against galvanic corrosion produced by the electrolytic action of salt or brackish water. Zinc is the ideal material for boats that operate in marine waters, since its electrochemical potential guarantees that zinc is the metal that corrodes instead of the noble components of the boat. Proper installation of these bars on steel or aluminum keels, rudders or structures is essential to preserve long-term structural integrity and avoid costly repairs due to advanced corrosion.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that a zinc anode bar needs replacement is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is insufficient. As a general maintenance guideline, it is recommended to inspect the condition of the zinc anodes at each beaching or, at a minimum, at the beginning and end of each navigation season. Replacing these anodes preventively is the most economical and effective measure to avoid corrosion of the boat's shafts, propellers and appendages, the repair or replacement of which involves a much higher cost.
