Description

Function and technical context

The zinc plate anode acts as sacrificial cathodic protection for the hull and submerged metal elements of the vessel, attracting galvanic corrosion to itself rather than to more expensive structures such as propellers, shafts, rudders or the hull itself. This component works within the electrolytic corrosion protection system, a passive but absolutely critical mechanism in any vessel that operates in salt, brackish or even fresh water with high conductivity. As a metal with more negative electrochemical potential than steel, aluminum or bronze, zinc preferentially oxidizes, absorbing degradation that would otherwise silently destroy the structural and propulsion components of the vessel. Without adequate sacrificial protection, galvanic corrosion can compromise the integrity of the propeller blade, puncture the hull or deteriorate shaft seals in a matter of months, with the attendant safety and cost consequences.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the zinc anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed between 50% and 75% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protection capacity is compromised. The inspection must be carried out at least once per nautical season, taking advantage of the ship's stranding, although in waters with high conductivity or on vessels with complex electrical installations it is advisable to inspect them every six months. Replacing the plate anode preventively is a minimal investment compared to the cost of repairing a corroded propeller or treating a hull damaged by galvanic corrosion pitting.
