Description

Function and technical context

This aluminum plate anode acts as sacrificial galvanic protection, absorbing electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal surfaces of the boat's hull, transom or submerged fittings. Being made of aluminum alloy, it is especially suitable for use in salt water and brackish water, where the electrochemical potential is high and the risk of galvanic corrosion is greater. Its plate format allows direct and safe fixation on flat surfaces of the hull or boat structures, guaranteeing efficient electrical contact with the metal it protects. Without cathodic protection in good condition, submerged metal parts—propeller, shaft, trim, legs or jaws—can suffer pitting and severe structural degradation in just a few sailing seasons.

When to replace this part?

A plate anode must be renewed when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, indicating that its sacrificial capacity is exhausted and it can no longer effectively protect adjacent metals. The recommended inspection is at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and as a general rule it is replaced at least once a year if the boat remains launched continuously. Preventatively changing the anode before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid costly corrosion damage to the hull, shaft or propeller.
