Function and technical context

This zinc plate anode with dimensions 151x69 mm acts as sacrificial galvanic protection on hulls and submerged metal surfaces of boats, protecting them against electrolytic corrosion caused by galvanic currents in water. Being a less noble metal than steel, aluminum or bronze in structural components, zinc preferentially corrodes, preserving the integrity of the hull, keel, rudder or other metal surfaces in contact with the aquatic environment. Its plate design facilitates direct fixation on flat surfaces of the hull, guaranteeing effective electrical contact with the metal mass of the boat. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can deteriorate critical hull structures in just a few seasons, leading to costly repairs or compromising the structural safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each navigation season, and replaced when they show wear greater than 50% of their mass, when cracks appear or when their surface shows a layer of compact white oxide that indicates passivation and loss of protective effectiveness. In salt water environments with high conductivity or in anchorage areas with dispersed electrical currents, consumption can be significantly faster, so it is advisable to check the condition of the anode every 3-4 months. Replacing the plate anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most recommended practice: the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to repairing a hull damaged by galvanic corrosion.
