Function and technical context

This aluminum plate anode acts as galvanic protection on the hull or transmission of boats equipped with Chrysler outboard engines, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent corrosion of submerged structural metal parts. Made of high-purity aluminum alloy, it is especially suitable for use in salt and brackish waters, where the potential for galvanic corrosion is highest. Its plate geometry with dimensions 123 x 36 mm allows direct and safe installation on the intended surfaces, guaranteeing optimal electrical contact with the structure to be protected. Without effective cathodic protection, the base metal of propellers, shafts, housings and drive components degrades irreversibly, leading to costly breakdowns and compromising the safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

A plate anode must be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, since below that threshold its protective capacity decreases drastically and the metal parts of the motor are exposed to electrolytic corrosion. As a general rule, it is recommended that the anodes be inspected at least once a season—or each time the boat leaves the water for beaching—and preventively replace them before the start of each boating season if they show significant wear. Changing the anode on time is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid the replacement of high-cost components such as axles or transmission housings.
