Function and technical context

This plate anode for Aquariva boats is made of aluminum (AL) and acts as active galvanic protection on the hull and submerged metal elements of the boat. Its function is to electrochemically sacrifice itself in place of noble metal parts—propellers, shafts, rudders, cavitators—which would otherwise suffer accelerated galvanic corrosion in contact with sea or brackish water. With dimensions of 100x28 mm, this plate format is installed directly on flat surfaces of the hull or stern, guaranteeing an adequate sacrificial surface for cathodic protection. When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season; The general rule is to replace them when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is insufficient. The most obvious symptoms of depleted anodes are pitting or visible corrosion on propellers, shafts or metal surfaces of the hull, as well as accelerated degradation of the antifouling paint in areas close to the propulsion elements.
