YAMAHA ALUMINUM ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The aluminum sacrificial anode is an essential component in the passive cathodic defense of Yamaha marine engines. It is strategically installed in areas of the engine block directly exposed to salt or brackish water, acting as an electrochemical barrier that absorbs galvanic corrosion before it damages the ferrous and steel structures of the propeller. In the water cooling system, it protects the internal galleries, cylinder liners and other cast components against the accelerated degradation characteristic of the marine environment. Without this active protection, oxidation would advance rapidly, compromising the tightness and structural integrity of the engine.
When to replace this part?
Aluminum anodes degrade progressively during each boating season, particularly in salt waters where the galvanic action is more aggressive. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at the end of each season of use and replace it if it shows erosion greater than 50% of its thickness or if it shows visible material losses. Preventive maintenance of this component is economically profitable, avoiding costly interventions on the engine block and guaranteeing the reliability of the cooling system during navigation.
