Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection component installed in the cooling circuit of Yamaha engines. It acts as a defensive barrier against galvanic corrosion generated by different metals in contact with salt water or mineralized fresh water. By preferentially oxidizing before the engine block, cylinder heads or cooling pipes, it absorbs the corrosive process and preserves the structural integrity of the cooling system. Its progressive degradation is a controlled sacrifice that prevents corrosion from attacking critical engine components.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season and renewed when it has lost 50 to 70 percent of its volume. Symptoms of a depleted anode include abnormal lime deposits inside the block, visible corrosion in the fresh water pipes, or increased engine operating temperature due to blockage of the coolant passage. Preventatively replacing the anode before it is completely depleted prevents costly repairs resulting from engine corrosion at sea.
