Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha marine engines. Made of reactive metal, it degrades in a controlled manner to neutralize the galvanic corrosion that occurs inside the engine when it comes into contact with salt or fresh water. It operates within the cooling and lubrication circuit, where contact between heterogeneous metals generates a destructive electrochemical potential. Without this anode, oxidation would advance rapidly in cylinder heads, cylinder blocks and internal cooling ducts, compromising the tightness of the powertrain and drastically reducing its useful life.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the end of each boating season; If they present erosion greater than 50% of their volume or show deep pits, they require immediate replacement. The typical replacement interval ranges between one and two seasons, conditioned by the salinity of the water, the accumulated hours of operation and the rigor of the preventive maintenance plan. Changing the anode preventively, before its total consumption, is the most profitable strategy to avoid very costly repairs caused by internal corrosion of the engine.
