Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the passive cathodic protection of Yamaha marine engines. Its function is to preferentially oxidize instead of the base metal of the engine, avoiding galvanic corrosion caused by the electrochemical interaction between salt water, the hull of the boat and the metal components of the propeller. When installed in areas with greater exposure to water - such as the casing, engine block and cooling ducts - it acts as a sacrificial barrier that is gradually consumed, significantly prolonging the useful life of critical parts such as cylinders, liners and internal passages of the engine.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes progressively degrade with use in salt water, especially during the intensive boating season. It is recommended to visually inspect the condition of the anode at the beginning of each season and replace it when it has lost more than 50% of its volume or presents marked surface corrosion. An annual preventive replacement is the most widespread practice among boat owners, since the cost of a new anode is negligible compared to that of repairing advanced galvanic corrosion in cylinders or cooling ducts.
