Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the passive cathodic protection system of Yamaha TD series marine engines. Made of aluminum, it acts as a defensive barrier against galvanic corrosion that occurs when the metal hull and engine components come into direct contact with salt or brackish water. By oxidizing preferentially compared to the metal parts of the engine, the anode wears out in a controlled manner, preventing corrosion from advancing on vital surfaces such as the engine block, cylinder head and cooling circuit ducts. Without this active protection, seawater would directly attack these structural components, compromising the tightness of the cooling system and accelerating the functional failure of the propeller.

When to replace this part?

The anode must be inspected at the beginning of each navigation season and replaced when it shows visible loss of material, progressive erosion or significant reduction in its section. In salt waters with intensive navigation, it is recommended to replace the anode annually to ensure continuous protection; In brackish waters or with moderate use, checking every two seasons is usually sufficient. Accelerated wear of the anode is an alarm signal about the state of the cooling system or poor insulation between the hull and the engine, so its preventive replacement avoids high-cost repairs in navigation and significantly prolongs the useful life of the propeller.
