Function and technical context

The TEN01135 sacrificial anode is a critical component in the cathodic protection system for Yamaha marine engines exposed to salt water. Made of aluminum, it works as a defensive barrier against electrochemical corrosion that affects the engine metals in contact with the marine electrolyte. Its mechanism of action is based on preferential oxidation: the aluminum of the anode degrades in a controlled manner, preventing critical parts of the engine such as the cylinder head, block or cooling pipes from corroding. The integrity of this component is decisive for the longevity of the cooling system and the structural stability of the propeller, especially during prolonged navigation through salt or brackish waters.

When to replace this part?

The anode must be inspected at the end of each navigation season and replaced when it shows visible erosion greater than 50% of its volume or when cracks and material detachments are seen. Unlike other consumables, the anode works silently without generating prior symptoms of breakdown, but its absence or complete degradation opens the door to accelerated corrosion in internal engine components that would compromise its functionality and safety. Preventative replacement is recommended each season or after 200-300 hours of saltwater boating to ensure continued protection and avoid costly repairs due to internal corrosion.
