YAMAHA ANODE 9.9 HP ALUMINUM
Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is a passive cathodic protection component installed on Yamaha 9.9 hp outboard motors to defend the seawater cooling system against electrochemical corrosion. Made of aluminum, it acts as a chemical barrier dissolved in water, protecting itself before oxidation reaches the engine block, cylinder head and internal cooling ducts. In boats that navigate in salt or brackish water, salinity exponentially accelerates corrosive processes, generating pitting, loss of tightness and premature engine failure if this preventive defense mechanism does not exist.
When to replace this part?
The anode wears out visibly and predictably: when it has lost between 50 and 80% of its mass it is time to replace it, before it is completely used up and leaves the engine unprotected. A visual inspection is recommended at the end of each navigation season, with annual preventive replacement on vessels that operate in salt water or under intensive use. Replacing the anode preventively avoids costly repairs in the shipyard and ensures that the engine maintains its structural integrity and operational reliability.
