Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the passive cathodic protection of 80-100 hp Yamaha outboard motors. Made of zinc or aluminum, it corrodes in a controlled manner instead of the engine's base metal, avoiding electrochemical oxidation that would degrade the iron and steel of the casing, cylinder head and cylinders. This system works in saltwater and freshwater environments, where the salinity and conductivity of the water generate natural galvanic currents that would directly attack the structural components of the propellant. Its presence significantly extends engine life by preventing internal and external corrosion, maintaining the integrity of critical parts that would otherwise require costly repairs or complete powertrain replacement.

When to replace this part?

The anode requires inspection at the beginning and end of each boating season, and must be replaced when it shows visible loss of mass, grayish discoloration or advanced erosion that significantly reduces its thickness. In salt water or water with high salinity, consumption is faster than in fresh water, so replacement may be necessary every 2-3 seasons. Preventatively replacing the anode before it is completely depleted is the best practice to prevent corrosion from directly attacking the engine casing, which would result in much more expensive repairs and extended downtime in peak season.
