Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha 4-stroke marine engines. Made of a reactive alloy with high galvanic reactivity, this anode corrodes in a controlled and predictable manner before the metal parts of the engine, protecting the engine block, cylinder head and internal components from electrochemical degradation caused by salt water and marine electrolyte. Its function is fundamental within the anti-corrosion protection system of the propeller, especially in vessels that operate in salt or brackish water where corrosion constitutes the most constant threat to the structural integrity of the engine and the tightness of the internal cooling circuits.

When to replace this part?

The anode requires frequent visual inspection and must be replaced when it shows wear of 50% or more with respect to its volume, or immediately if it is completely corroded. It is recommended to check the condition of the anode at the beginning of each sailing season and replace it preventively every two seasons of intense use in salt water, since its depletion leaves the engine exposed to accelerated corrosion that can result in irreparable damage to the cooling system, internal leaks and premature failure of the propeller. Keeping the anode in good condition is the most effective preventive measure to avoid costly engine block repairs and ensure the longevity of the propulsion equipment.
