YAMAHA ANODE 20-30 ALUMINUM
Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is a critical component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha 20-30 marine engines. Made of aluminum, it acts as an electrochemical barrier against galvanic corrosion that is generated in contact between different metals and salt water. It is installed in strategic areas of the engine block, water pump housing or cooling system, where it preferentially absorbs corrosive attacks instead of the base metal of the engine. Its function is essential to preserve the structural integrity of the engine and prevent the formation of oxides that close the cooling ducts or weaken vital components.
When to replace this part?
Aluminum anodes should be inspected at the end of each boating season; If they present advanced corrosion, severe erosion or significant volume reduction, they require immediate replacement. It is recommended to replace them preventively every year or after 200-300 hours of navigation in salt water, especially in boats that remain at anchor. A worn anode quickly loses protective capacity, exposing the engine to accelerated corrosion that can cause leaks, water ingress into cylinders and costly repairs; Preventative replacement is a minimal investment compared to repairing a corroded engine block.
