Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the passive cathodic protection of marine engines. Its function is to preferably oxidize due to the galvanic corrosion generated by salt or brackish water on noble metals such as copper, brass and stainless steel present in the engine block, cooling system and heat exchangers. When immersed in conductive water, the anode acts as a point of electrochemical attack, protecting itself to safeguard the structural integrity of critical engine parts. Without an anode in good condition, the internal components suffer accelerated corrosion that compromises the tightness of the cooling system and the mechanical durability of the propulsion equipment.

When to replace this part?

The anode requires periodic visual inspection after each navigation season: if it shows erosion of more than 50% of its volume or shows fractures, it must be replaced immediately. Galvanic corrosion acts continuously in salt water, so it is recommended to check and change the anode annually or every 200-300 hours of operation in seawater conditions. Replacing it preventively at the beginning of the season avoids costly surprises at sea and significantly prolongs the life of the engine.
