Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential cathodic protection component on Yamaha outboard motors from 115 to 225 hp operating in salt or brackish water. Its function is to oxidize preferentially instead of the metal parts of the engine, acting as an electrochemical shield against galvanic corrosion. Installed in critical areas of the engine casing and cooling system, it absorbs the corrosive activity of the marine environment, significantly extending the life of cylinders, cylinder heads, fresh water pipes and internal iron and aluminum components. Without this protection, sea salt progressively dissolves the metals in the engine, compromising sealing, cooling and performance.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the end of each saltwater boating season; If they present a volume loss of more than 50% or visible erosion, it is time to change them. Annual preventive replacement is the recommended practice in boats frequently used in marine waters, since a depleted anode loses all its protective capacity and exposes the engine to accelerated corrosion. Changing the anode preventively is a minimal investment compared to repairs of corroded blocks or replacements of cylinder heads.
