Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection system of Yamaha marine engines from 130 to 280 hp. Its main function is to oxidize in a controlled manner to protect the internal metal parts of the engine against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process accelerated by prolonged exposure to salt water and electrolytes present in the marine environment. When installed in direct electrical contact with the engine block, it acts as a chemical barrier that diverts corrosive ions, preventing critical components such as the cylinder block, cylinder head and cooling systems from suffering progressive deterioration. Without this protection element, corrosion would advance rapidly in the contact areas between different metals, compromising the tightness of the water chambers, reducing the thermal dissipation capacity and, finally, putting the structural and functional integrity of the propellant at risk.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be thoroughly inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when they have lost between 50% and 75% of their mass, depending on the water characteristics and salinity level of the typical operating area. In salt waters or in ports with high industrial activity, the consumption of the anode accelerates significantly, so it is recommended to check its condition every 200 to 300 hours of engine operation. Preventative and routine replacement before the anode is completely consumed ensures that the engine remains protected against internal corrosion, avoiding major repairs that can immobilize the boat at the worst possible moment.
