Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection component integrated into the cooling circuit of Yamaha engines from 130 to 160 hp. Its mission is to oxidize in a controlled manner to avoid galvanic corrosion in critical metal parts such as the engine block, cylinder head and salt water pipes. When exposed to continuous contact with fresh or salt water, it acts as an electrochemical barrier, progressively degrading instead of allowing corrosion to attack structural elements of the engine. Without their presence, accelerated corrosion would compromise the integrity of the cooling system and significantly reduce propellant life.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the end of each boating season, especially on boats operating in salt water where wear is more rapid. If the anode shows significant volume reduction, advanced corrosion, or has partially dislodged, it requires immediate replacement to maintain engine protection. Preventive replacement before starting the sailing season is the practice recommended by professional shipyards, thus avoiding costly repairs due to oxidation of internal components that could be detected only when the engine has already suffered irreversible damage.
