YAMAHA ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The TEN01167 sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection component installed on Yamaha outboard motors operating in saline or brackish environments. Its function is to rust in a controlled manner rather than allowing the engine's steel and alloys to undergo galvanic corrosion, a destructive process that occurs when dissimilar metals come into contact with conductive water. By preferentially degrading, this anode significantly extends the life of vital engine parts, preventing structural damage to the cylinder head, block and cooling systems that would result in extremely costly repairs.
When to replace this part?
The anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when it has lost between 50 and 80% of its volume, or if it shows accelerated erosion after boating in very saline waters. Preventive replacement before the start of the season is the recommended practice for boats in heavy use or moored in salt water, since a depleted anode leaves the engine exposed to galvanic corrosion that compromises critical components without obvious symptoms until the damage is irreversible.
