Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is a fundamental component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha and Mariner marine engines. Made of zinc, it progressively dissolves in salt water to neutralize the electrochemical corrosion that naturally attacks the submerged metal surfaces of the engine. It works on the cooling system and structural protection of the engine block, preventing the deterioration of cylinders, internal liners and critical cast iron components. Its function is essential: by sacrificing the anode, it protects the vital parts of the engine from oxidation that would compromise the sealing, cooling and finally the structural integrity of the propulsion unit.
When to replace this part?
Accelerated corrosion of the anode, its visible reduction in size or the appearance of whitish deposits around the engine block are clear indicators that it requires immediate replacement. It is recommended to inspect and change the anode at least once per boating season, especially if operating in salt or brackish waters; A preventive inspection before each start of the season avoids failures due to internal corrosion that would result in costly repairs and time out of the water. Replacing this part on a scheduled basis is the most effective measure to extend the life of the engine.
