Function and technical context

The TEN01164 sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection component designed for Yamaha marine engines operating in saline or freshwater environments. Its function is to oxidize in a controlled manner instead of the base metal of the engine, preventing electrochemical corrosion that affects the engine block, cylinder head and internal cooling systems. This anode is integrated into the engine cooling circuit, where water constantly circulates and generates natural electrical potentials capable of corroding ferrous metals and alloys. Without active cathodic protection, accelerated corrosion compromises engine tightness, causes coolant leaks, and can lead to premature failure of critical cylinders and gaskets.

When to replace this part?

The sacrificial anode wears out progressively during each sailing season; A visual inspection will reveal a visible reduction in anode volume, accelerated surface corrosion, or even material loss. It is recommended to check the condition of the anode at the beginning of each sailing season and replace it when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, without waiting for it to be completely used up. Keeping the anode in good condition prevents costly repairs to cylinders, cylinder heads and cooling systems that can leave the engine inoperative at sea or during the fishing season.
