YAMAHA ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The TEN01163 sacrificial anode is a critical component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha sterndrives equipped with saltwater cooling systems. This element is integrated directly into the engine cooling circuits, where it is continuously exposed to electrochemical corrosion processes derived from contact with seawater. Its function is to oxidize preferentially before the structural metals of the propellant, acting as a protective barrier against electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise penetrate the cylinder head, the engine block and the internal passages of the cooling system, compromising the mechanical integrity and performance of the engine.
When to replace this part?
The sacrificial anode should be inspected at the conclusion of each boating season, particularly in saltwater operations where electrochemical corrosion is significantly accelerated. If you see visible erosion, notable loss of material, or if the anode has been reduced to less than 50% of its size, it is time for replacement. Preventive renewal every season or every 200-300 hours of operation prevents corrosion from penetrating the internal cavities of the engine and causing costly repairs; A degraded anode confirms that your cathodic protection system is doing its job, but requires replacement to maintain propellant longevity.
