YAMAHA ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The TEN01159 sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection element built into Yamaha engines operating in salt or fresh water environments. This component progressively dissolves in place of the engine's base metal, neutralizing the galvanic processes that corrode the block, cylinder head and cooling passages. Its presence is essential in any marine thruster, since it prevents structural degradation of the engine that compromises coolant circulation, generates internal leaks and can lead to total failure of the unit if it is not maintained in optimal conditions.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes require inspection at the close of each boating season and should be replaced when there is greater than 50% mass loss or when active corrosion is detected on the metal surfaces of the engine. In frequent saltwater operations, annual replacement is recommended even if visual wear is not apparent, as a degraded anode loses its protective ability and exposes internal components to accelerated corrosion resulting in repairs considerably more expensive than regular preventive maintenance.
