YAMAHA ALUMINUM ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The aluminum sacrificial anode acts as an electrochemical protective barrier against galvanic corrosion in Yamaha marine engines. Installed in areas of direct contact with salt water, it selectively absorbs corrosive processes that would otherwise attack critical metal engine components, such as the cylinder head, cylinder block and cooling passages. This protection is essential in salt water cooling systems, where salinity significantly accelerates the deterioration of ferrous and copper alloys. Without a functional anode, the motor would suffer accelerated oxidation that would compromise sealing, thermal dissipation and overall propulsion reliability.
When to replace this part?
Aluminum anodes are gradually consumed due to their sacrificial function and require visual inspection at least once per boating season, especially in salty waters or waters with high mineral concentration. If the anode shows erosion greater than 50% of its volume, marked porosity or loss of physical continuity, it must be replaced immediately to prevent galvanic corrosion from migrating to expensive internal components. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season is the recommended practice on frequently used vessels, guaranteeing uninterrupted protection throughout the entire navigation campaign.
