Description

Function and technical context

This aluminum sacrificial anode acts as a protective barrier against galvanic corrosion in Yamaha marine engines, an electrochemical process inevitable in saline and freshwater environments. The anode degrades in a controlled manner instead of the engine block and its internal components, absorbing corrosive ions that would attack the iron and steel of the cooling system and casing. Its presence is essential on any outboard or sterndrive motor operating in salt or contaminated water, where rust would advance rapidly without this passive protection. Uncontrolled corrosion would cause internal leaks, loss of tightness and catastrophic engine failure in a short time of navigation.

When to replace this part?

The aluminum anode should be inspected at the beginning of each boating season and replaced when it has lost between 50% and 80% of its volume; Accelerated wear indicates an active corrosive environment that requires immediate attention. If the anode is completely gone or reduced to fragments, the engine has been running unprotected and it is advisable to perform an internal corrosion inspection before continuing. Preventatively replacing the anode every year or every 200-300 hours of operation prevents costly internal damage to the engine block and significantly extends the life of the boat.
