YAMAHA ALUMINUM ANODE

Function and technical context

The aluminum anode is a cathodic protection component that acts in the cooling system and casing of high displacement Yamaha engines. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion on internal engine components exposed to salt or brackish water, such as liners, block and cooling systems. When immersed in a marine environment, the anode preferentially oxidizes, thus protecting the metal surfaces of the motor. Without this component, progressive corrosion would compromise the tightness of the block, cause internal leaks and accelerate the wear of water passages.

When to replace this part?

The anode must be inspected at the beginning of each navigation season and replaced when it shows visible wear greater than 50% of its volume or if it shows material detachments. In waters with high salinity or high temperatures, the anode consumption rate increases considerably, and it is recommended to check it every 100-150 hours of operation. Preventively replacing the anode before it is completely exhausted avoids irreversible damage to the engine block and costly repairs at the dock.
