YAMAHA ALUMINUM ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The aluminum anode acts as a sacrificial barrier in the cooling circuit of Yamaha engines, protecting itself through controlled oxidation to prevent electrolytic corrosion of internal metal components. Its function is essential in salt or brackish water environments, where galvanic action accelerates the wear of iron and copper. When the anode is consumed, the noble metals of the engine are exposed to corrosion, causing loss of tightness, coolant leaks and, in extreme cases, water entering the engine block.
When to replace this part?
Checking the condition of the anode should be carried out at least at the end of each boating season or after 100-150 hours of operation, especially in salt water. Symptoms of advanced wear include visible corrosion on the engine casing, rust stains around the cooling gaskets, or metal particles in the coolant. Replacing the anode preventively is an economical measure that avoids costly repairs resulting from corrosion in the engine block or internal water passages.
