This element degrades in a controlled and predictable manner, absorbing corrosive ions that would otherwise directly attack the engine block, the cylinder head and the internal passages of the cooling circuit. By acting as an electrochemical barrier, the sacrificial anode protects the vital metallic components of the propellant, preventing progressive oxidation from compromising the tightness of the engine and deteriorating its operational life.
