Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha marine engines submerged in salt water. Made of high-purity zinc or aluminum, this element degrades in a controlled manner to prevent electrochemical corrosion from attacking the vital metal parts of the engine: cylinder head, engine block, cooling pipes and internal components. Acting as a “sacrificial shield,” it absorbs corrosive ions from salt water, significantly extending the life of the machine. Its installation in the cooling water passage area is critical to maintain the structural integrity of the propulsion unit throughout its operational life.
When to replace this part?
The anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when it has eroded 50% of its volume or sooner if corrosion is evident. Engines operated in salt water or contaminated water require annual anode replacement as a standard preventive practice. Replacing the anode preventatively is a minimal investment that avoids costly repairs due to corrosion of internal engine components, especially when the boat is moored for long periods of time.
