Description

Function and Technical Context

Sacrificial anodes are the galvanic shield of outboard motors: being manufactured from aluminum, they corrode preferentially, protecting the metal components of the engine block, transmission, and lower unit against electrolytic corrosion caused by saltwater, brackish water, or high mineral content water. The anode CM433580A is specifically designed for Johnson and Evinrude motors, integrating at the factory-designated sacrifice points to ensure effective cathodic protection. Without proper anodic protection, critical components such as the propeller housing, skeg, or lower unit covers can suffer pitting and accelerated erosion that compromise the structural integrity of the motor and result in costly repairs.

When to Replace This Anode?

The clearest sign that the anode has completed its service life is a reduction greater than 50% of its volume or mass compared to its new state; at that point it has lost effective protection capacity and must be replaced immediately. Aluminum anodes for Johnson and Evinrude motors should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced at least annually or sooner if visible wear requires it, especially in saltwater areas or high conductivity zones. Replacing the anode preventively at the start of the season is the most cost-effective maintenance measure to prevent irreversible damage to the lower unit during open water operation.
