Description
Function and Technical Context
The sacrifice anode for the propeller hub protects the submerged metal parts of the engine through the principle of cathodic protection: being manufactured from aluminum alloy, it corrodes before the steel or bronze of the hub and adjacent components, acting as an electrochemical barrier against galvanic corrosion. This component works directly in the propulsion system, located in the propeller hub of high-power OMC outboard engines—Johnson and Evinrude—where continuous exposure to saltwater, brackish water, or electrically conductive water creates an especially aggressive environment. Without effective cathodic protection, the propeller hub, shaft, and coupling elements can suffer pitting and structural deterioration that compromise power transmission and vessel safety.
When to Replace This Part?
The clearest indicator that the hub anode should be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when it appears visibly reduced, irregular, or with deep cavities, it has stopped protecting the metal components of the propulsion assembly correctly. It is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replace it at least once per year in saltwater navigation, or every two seasons in freshwater. Preventively replacing the anode is the most economical measure to avoid damage from galvanic corrosion in the propeller hub and shaft, failures that at sea can be costly and dangerous.
