Description
Function and Technical Context
The sacrificial anode for OMC stern drive acts as cathodic protection for the metallic components of the stern and transmission, absorbing galvanic corrosion produced when different metals are submerged in salt water or brackish water. Being manufactured in aluminum, it is especially suitable for use in salt water, where electrochemical corrosion is more aggressive on the external transmission, shaft and propeller. Without proper cathodic protection in good condition, the aluminum and steel components of the stern drive are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the transmission and result in serious and costly failures. The reference CM397768A replaces the OMC 397768 reference, guaranteeing full compatibility with the stern drives of Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors in the affected range.
When to Replace This Part?
The anode should be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season: when it has lost more than 50% of its mass or presents a completely cracked and hardened surface, it must be replaced immediately. In areas of very saline water or with high electrical conductivity, wear can be faster and require intermediate inspections during the season. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure possible: the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to the repair or replacement of a corroded stern drive.
