Description

Function and technical context

This aluminum sacrificial anode is part of the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor, acting as an active electrode that preferentially corrodes to preserve the noble metal parts of the propeller - engine body, shaft, cavitation and tail components - against the electrochemical attack of salt, brackish or contaminated water. Located in strategic areas of the motor unit, the anode concentrates on itself the galvanic corrosion that would otherwise silently attack the metal structure of the motor. Its progressive degradation is precisely its way of working: an anode that is not consumed is not protecting. When the sacrificial material is completely exhausted, galvanic corrosion advances without barrier on casings, collectors and shafts, generating costly and difficult to repair breakdowns. Made of aluminum alloy, this anode is ideal for salty and brackish waters where electrolytic conductivity requires active and effective protection.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs replacement is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its volume: at that point the protective capacity drops drastically and leaves the engine surfaces exposed. It should also be replaced if it presents cracks, fragmentations or if upon inspection it presents a smooth and compact surface without signs of erosion - this may indicate passivation of the material, which no longer protects properly. The recommended replacement is annual, coinciding with maintenance at the end or beginning of the season, regardless of the apparent visual state. Changing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to high-cost components such as the tail or engine block.
