Function and technical context

Sealing O-rings are sealing elements that work in the cooling and lubrication circuits of Volvo Penta marine diesel engines, acting as a hermetic barrier between components subjected to pressure and continuous flow of coolant liquids and oil. This kit includes five O-rings made of elastomeric compound resistant to fluids and thermal conditions typical of marine diesel engines of the D3, D4, D6, D7, D9 and MD series. Its function is to prevent leaks at the joints between benches, covers, heat exchangers, cooling pump and other interfaces of the cooling circuit. A poor seal in these joints can cause loss of coolant, engine overheating, oil contamination or entry of water into internal circuits, with the consequent risk of serious damage while navigating.

When to replace this part?

O-rings tend to harden, crack or deform over time and thermal cycles, manifesting themselves through moisture stains or traces of coolant in the component joining area, progressive loss of coolant liquid level without apparent cause or presence of bubbles in the cooling circuit. It is recommended to inspect and renew the cooling circuit O-rings during each seasonal maintenance or each time the component in which they are housed is dismantled, since reusing a dismantled O-ring considerably increases the risk of leakage. Replacing this kit preventively during scheduled inspections is the most effective practice to avoid breakdowns due to overheating at sea and the costly repairs that entail.
