Gear Lube for Marine Sterndrives

Gear lube lubricates the gears in the lower unit of the engine: pinion, ring gear, propeller shaft and bearings. It is essential to change it at least once a year or every 100 hours, as saltwater can seep past the seals and contaminate the oil, accelerating gear wear.

Types of gear lube

Gear Lube SAE 80W-90 — standard oil for most sterndrives and lower units: Mercury Alpha One, Bravo, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda
High Performance Gear Lube (HP) — for sterndrives under high power: Bravo III, Duo Prop, engines over 150 HP
Synthetic gear lube — maximum protection for intensive use, racing or charter boats

How to tell if your lower unit needs an oil change?

Drain the oil from the lower plug: if it comes out milky (white/grey), water has entered and you need to replace the seals as well as the oil. Healthy oil should be clear or slightly dark.
