Description

Function and technical context

As the final link in the propulsion chain, this three-blade aluminum propeller converts engine torque into hydraulic thrust, propelling the vessel through water via the rotational action of the tailshaft driven by the outboard motor's bevel gear. Its 10-inch pitch and 9.30-inch diameter geometry has been specifically designed for 9 HP outboard motors from OMC, Johnson and Evinrude, where the balance between acceleration and cruising speed is critical in lightweight vessels, inflatables and small speedboats. Right-hand rotation (clockwise viewed from astern) is essential for proper transmission system operation: installing a propeller with incorrect rotation causes direct interference with the reverse gear mechanism and can damage the shaft and foot seals. A deformed blade, with cavitation erosion or material stripped by impact immediately compromises propulsive efficiency and subjects the engine assembly to harmful asymmetrical stresses.

When to replace this component?

The clearest signs that the propeller requires replacement are: abnormal vibrations perceptible at the transom or rudder, inability to achieve specified maximum RPM under normal load, loss of top speed with no apparent engine cause, metallic noise during navigation or visible cavitation in the wake. Aluminum propellers must be visually inspected at the start of each boating season and mandatory after any contact with seabed, sand, nets or floating debris, as their lower hardness compared to stainless steel makes them more vulnerable to deformation and impact damage. Replacing the propeller at the first sign of damage prevents asymmetrical stresses on the propeller shaft and outboard motor foot seals, preventing costly failures during navigation.
