Description

Function and Technical Context

The propeller acts as the final transmission element between the propulsion unit and the water, converting the torque from the outboard motor into thrust directly on the water medium. This three-blade aluminum unit, belonging to the AMITA3 series, features a diameter of 13 inches and a pitch of 19 inches with right-hand rotation, a combination that favors top speed in lightweight hulls powered by medium-power outboard motors. The 19-inch pitch requires the motor to operate within its rated speed band to extract maximum efficiency: a poorly balanced shaft or a blade with altered geometry can induce vibrations in the motor transom, accelerate wear on the transmission bearings, and progressively increase fuel consumption. The aluminum used in its construction provides an adequate response to repetitive hydrostatic loads, although it requires periodic inspection after any contact with solid objects, as this material can deform or splinter permanently, compromising the dynamic balance of the propulsion unit.

When to Replace This Part?

The most common signs that the propeller requires replacement are: noticeable vibrations in the transom or hull itself during navigation, loss of top speed or acceleration response with no apparent cause attributable to the motor, visible warping or denting in one or more blades, and persistent cavitation even in calm waters. Aluminum propellers are especially vulnerable to impact with rocky bottoms, floating debris, or anchor chains, situations that can bend the blades irreversibly and unbalance the rotation, transmitting damaging forces to the shaft seal and the transom bearings. It is recommended to visually inspect the propeller at the beginning and end of each boating season, as well as after any grounding, and proceed with preventive replacement at the slightest sign of damage, since operating with a damaged propeller can result in serious and costly damage to the transmission or the motor's reduction gearbox.
