Seats

Boat seats and seat pedestals

A boat seat is one of those items you only appreciate after three hours under way in a choppy sea. Unlike an ordinary seat, it has to cope with direct sun, salt, permanent damp and impact loads, and do it without the stitching giving way or the inside rotting.

At Repuestos Marinos you will find folding, flip-up, helm and skipper boat seats, along with pedestals, swivel bases, slides and brackets to fit them to your boat.

Types of seat and pedestal

Folding seat. The backrest folds down to free up space and make stowing easier. It is the most versatile solution on open boats and RIBs.

Helm seat. With a high backrest, armrests and, on many models, a flip-up cushion so you can steer standing while leaning against it. This is the helm station on medium and large motorboats.

Benches and bow seats. Simpler units, intended for passengers, often with an access lid and stowage space underneath.

Fixed pedestal. A fixed-height column, the most rigid and most affordable solution.

Height-adjustable pedestal (pneumatic or gas). It lets you set the height to suit the helmsman and the sea state. Very comfortable for fishing and on boats where you alternate between sitting and standing.

Swivel base and slide. The swivel lets the seat turn through 360°, which is useful when fishing; the slide adjusts the distance to the wheel and the controls.

Materials: what stands up to sun and salt

Upholstery. Look for marine vinyl with UV protection and an anti-mildew, antibacterial treatment. Leather and automotive upholstery do not survive marine exposure. The seams should be sewn with polyester or PTFE thread, not cotton, which rots.

Padding. Open-cell foam with drainage, or closed-cell foam that does not hold water. A seat with absorbent foam stays damp for days and ends up smelling and growing mildew.

Frame. Treated marine plywood, polypropylene or aluminium. Avoid chipboard and untreated plywood: as soon as water gets in through an eyelet or a staple, it swells and the seat starts to sag.

Hardware. AISI 316 stainless steel for all exposed fasteners. That is what separates a seat that lasts ten years from one that works loose in two.

Installation and care

Always reinforce the mounting area with a stainless steel or marine plywood backing plate underneath the deck. A seat takes tugs and impacts, and screws tightened straight into a thin deck eventually tear through it.

Seal the screw holes with marine sealant so that water cannot get into the core of the deck sandwich. That is the silent cause of most delamination.

Clean the upholstery with fresh water and a mild soap. Do not use bleach: it kills surface mildew but degrades the vinyl and the stitching. Apply a dedicated UV protectant twice a season and use covers when the boat is laid up: direct sun is what shortens the life of marine upholstery most.

Frequently asked questions about boat seats

Which upholstery lasts best on a boat seat?

Marine vinyl with UV protection and an anti-mildew, antibacterial treatment, with seams sewn in polyester or PTFE thread. Leather and automotive upholstery do not survive marine exposure: they dry out, crack, and cotton stitching rots.

How do I fit a boat seat without damaging the deck?

Always reinforce the mounting area with a stainless steel or marine plywood backing plate underneath the deck, and seal the screw holes with marine sealant. Screws tightened straight into a thin deck eventually tear through it, and water getting in through the hole delaminates the core of the sandwich.

What is the difference between a fixed and an adjustable pedestal?

A fixed pedestal has a constant height: it is more rigid and cheaper. An adjustable one, normally pneumatic or gas, lets you set the height to suit the helmsman and the sea state, which is very comfortable for fishing and on boats where you alternate between sitting and standing.

Can I clean seat upholstery with bleach?

It is not advisable. Bleach removes surface mildew but degrades the vinyl and weakens the stitching, so in the medium term it shortens the life of the seat considerably. Use fresh water with a mild soap and apply a dedicated UV protectant twice a season.

What padding should a marine seat have?

Open-cell foam with a drainage system, or closed-cell foam that does not hold water. A seat with absorbent foam stays damp for days after rain and ends up smelling and growing mildew inside, even if the upholstery looks sound.

Do you sell the pedestal or the base on its own, without the seat?

Yes. We stock complete seats and also all their components separately: fixed and adjustable pedestals, swivel bases, slides, brackets and fasteners, so you can replace just the part you need.
