Function and technical context

This sacrificial anode acts as a cathodic protection element in the outboard motor's anti-corrosion system, attracting galvanic corrosion to itself to preserve the most valuable metal parts of the engine: powertrain body, shaft, water cover and aluminum components exposed to salt or brackish water. Made of zinc, it is the component that is literally "sacrificed" so that the rest of the engine does not suffer the electrochemical attack caused by the potential difference between different metals in contact with seawater. Without effective cathodic protection, corrosion can destroy critical engine parts in just a few seasons, leading to serious breakdowns and high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be renewed is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it has reached the limit of its useful life and no longer protects effectively. As a general rule, it is advisable to inspect it at each beaching and replace it at the beginning of each season or when wear exceeds 50%, without waiting for it to disappear completely. Replacing it preventively is the most economical maintenance measure that exists to avoid corrosion of components whose repair can cost hundreds or thousands of euros.
