Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the outboard motor's cathodic protection system, placing itself in the engine block to attract electrolytic corrosion before it affects the aluminum and steel structural metal parts. Being made of high-purity zinc, it degrades in a controlled manner in contact with salt or brackish water, protecting critical components such as the engine casing, cooling circuits and submerged metal parts. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can compromise block integrity and lead to serious and costly engine failure.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode must be changed is a visible loss of mass greater than 50% of its volume: when the zinc appears greatly reduced, cracked or consumed, it has stopped offering effective protection. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season and replace them preventively at the beginning of each navigation season or when they show significant wear, without waiting for their total consumption. Replacing the anode in time is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to high-cost components of the Suzuki engine.
